Exhibitions and events
The Rhineland Department puts on one exhibition per year. This is accompanied by a series of events in spring/summer and autumn/winter. Depending on the theme and cooperation partners, these events include lectures, discussion evenings, workshops, readings, concerts and other formats. Guided tours of the Rhineland Department are also offered regularly in the run-up to evening events.
In addition, the Rhineland Department regularly organises conferences on regional history and archival science.

Between Being and (Persil) Appearance – Denazification in North Rhine-Westphalia
After the end of the war, the Allies took measures to eliminate National Socialist ideologies in German society. In 1946, Entnazifizierung, derived from the English term ‘denazification,’ began in North Rhine-Westphalia. As part of this process, a section of the population – including many civil servants – had to fill out questionnaires about their political activities during the Nazi era, particularly regarding membership in the NSDAP and affiliated organisations. So-called denazification committees assessed the severity of guilt in five categories: from ‘main culprits’ to ‘exonerated’ . Those found guilty were removed from office, while those less incriminated were often allowed to remain in their jobs. The implementation and results of denazification were criticised because those found guilty got away scot-free, among other things with character references, so-called ‘Persilscheine’ (certificates of good conduct).
Exhibition opening on 18 March 2025
Public guided tours (in german) of the exhibition on 21 October 2025, 18 November 2025 and 20 January 2026, 5 p.m.
Interested parties are welcome to attend. Registration is not required.
