Press and public relations

The archive has a diverse range of user groups. The Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen attempts to cater to this diversity by offering special services as part of its public relations work.
The Landesarchiv website provides basic general information. In addition, the Landesarchiv publishes brochures, flyers and other information material on individual departments and areas of responsibility in printed and digital form.

public relations

The Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen is keen to make its rich cultural heritage and services known to as wide an audience as possible. To this end, it regularly participates in the ‘Archives Day’, which takes place every two years throughout Germany. On this occasion, and on request, the Landesarchiv offers guided tours of the individual buildings and workshops in the Technical Centre.

The Landesarchiv has special offers for individual user groups. For family researchers, the East Westphalia-Lippe department of the Landesarchiv has been organising the Detmold Summer Talks since 2004 with the aim of bringing together genealogists, historians and archivists and stimulating interdisciplinary exchange. In order to promote cooperation with the staff of the state authorities, the Landesarchiv regularly organises so-called Behördentage. These are aimed at individual branches of the administration. In addition to a guided tour of the archive, the Authority Days offer an opportunity to discuss all questions relating to document management, disposal and archiving.

As houses of history, the departments of the Landesarchiv provide information on their historical heritage and the possibilities for its evaluation in lectures, exhibitions and publications. By publishing sources of significance to the history of the state, compiling thematic inventories and creating overviews of the archive holdings, the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen expands the source base for historical research. Its departments are diverse and closely linked to cultural institutions and associations in the region, with which they cooperate.

Publications

Since the 1950s, the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen has published inventories, finding aids, brief overviews, sources and research results, exhibition catalogues, articles on archival practice, teaching and working materials, and cabinet files in various series (A-K). Since 2005, all publications by the Landesarchiv, which was founded the previous year, have been compiled in a series and are numbered consecutively.

The publications can be ordered directly from the Landesarchiv at buchbestellungen[at]lav.nrw.de.

The Landesarchiv's largest ongoing edition project is the edition of the cabinet minutes of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia. Since 1992, the cabinet minutes and a selection of cabinet files have been made available in a scientifically annotated edition. The printed version comprises the cabinet minutes of one legislative period per double volume.

Online edition of cabinet minutes

Since 2007, the cabinet minutes have also been published in an online edition. Following the publication of the 8th legislative period in 2016, it was decided to revise and modernise the digital edition: in the course of ongoing digitisation, the data on the state's history was to be secured in a long-term, uniform and (in terms of editorial science) standardised XML-TEI format.

annual reports

The Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen regularly reports on its work in annual reports. In addition to information about events and publications, the reports contain statistical data and explanations of the areas of responsibility, including cataloguing and provision, preservation, archival formation and use.

The Landesarchiv's annual reports are aimed at politicians and administrators as archive holders, but may also be of interest to users, as they also refer to newly catalogued holdings and current publications. The annual reports are available free of charge from the Landesarchiv.
