The Rhineland Department
The Rhineland Department preserves the documents and files of the former territories and dominions as well as the monasteries and abbeys of the northern part of the Prussian Rhine Province. It also took over the files of the central and lower authorities of this district. Since 1952, it has also been responsible for the ministries and higher authorities of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, founded in 1946, and actively documents the history of the state. To supplement the state records, the Rhineland Department preserves documents from political parties and associations, as well as the estates of important figures in the state's history, image, film, and audio documents, and the largest publicly accessible aerial photo archive in the Federal Republic of Germany.
It also preserves the state's share of civil status records, i.e., church records, civil and civil status registers from the administrative districts of Düsseldorf and Cologne.
